“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.”
Psalm 103:13 ESV
As we celebrate Father’s Day, we have the opportunity to honor our fathers, grandfathers, caretakers, and other father figures we may have to thank. It is such a special privilege to celebrate Father’s Day. However, not everyone has had an earthly father in their life who has shown them compassion and protection and attention. And perhaps you did have that, but that person has since gone on to join the Lord in Heaven. In either case, know that we deeply mourn your loss alongside you. We weep with you.
As much compassion and protection and attention as your father or father figure may have given you, or failed to give you, luckily we all have something even greater beyond anything that human power can give. We all have a father who loves unconditionally, who never stoops below perfection, who protects us with his armor & shield, and who knows our needs & always meets them.
We have the greatest Father of all who watches over us with such love and adoration from the heavens. So whatever you have lacked in life, He will provide for it himself.
Mark 11:24 says, “‘Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.’” What do you feel like you have lacked in your earthly father relationship? Turn your eyes towards heaven and ask the Father who always gives abundantly and completely. Do you feel as if you have lacked nothing? Turn your eyes towards heaven and praise the Lord for a glimpse of His character in your life here on earth.
Those who are fathers now, or will be, have such a duty to show their children God’s love here on earth. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” As a father, you have one of the greatest duties the Lord can bestow, a duty to love and protect the children who were His children first. Start them off the way they should go: following the steps of the Lord. Pray over them every day, so that they may cling closely to the footsteps of God forever.
Today, if you have been wronged by a father or lost a father, please know that the Lord will heal your heart and fill anything that you feel you have lacked.
Today, if you have a present father or father figure that has done their best to love you and care for you, celebrate them. Forgive them when they fall short. And, most importantly, praise God for them.
Today, if you are a father, remember to show compassion to your children, in the same way that the Father of all has shown compassion to you. Raise them up in the love of their heavenly Father.
Happy Father’s Day, may you feel abundantly loved and comforted today.
