“But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.” John 19:33-34
This bit of scripture from John 19 is extremely important as it brings to life the prophecy of Exodus 12 in the rules for Passover given to Moses and Aaron (God commanded that the Passover lamb not have its legs broken). Yet, one of the most special parts of this passage is that we see that Jesus did, however, have scars.
So often, we like to hide our scars whether they are physical, mental, or spiritual. Yet, Jesus does not. He openly lets His disciple Thomas each touch the very hands and side that were pierced just a few days earlier. His scars become the proof of His resurrection and the proof that He truly is the Jesus that walked with them, talked with them, and taught them.
What if we treated our scars the same? Instead of burying them deeply with shame or embarrassment – what if we wore them openly. What if they could help other people see the proof of a living, breathing God. Our scars are proof that we are not who we once were; proof that God has reconciled us to himself through Christ. We are more than our trauma, more than our past mistakes, and far more than our mess-ups. We are God’s children, His Church, and His chosen people.
The soldiers came to break Jesus’s bones, yet they chose not to when they saw He was already dead. God stepped in and fulfilled the prophecies made about Christ to the furthest extent. The Good News is, just like Jesus, we won’t break either. When we take up our crosses and die to ourselves, we may have scars and bruises – but we will not be broken. You are SAVED and LOVED and ACCEPTED, and so are your scars.
